RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of access tunnels leading to the depot... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members on duty over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the US military conducted what it described as a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
